Aldi’s Colleague Shops: Turning Waste into Opportunity

Aldi colleague only stores to reduce food waste
Aldi has launched ‘colleague shops’ across the UK, giving employees access to discounted food items that cannot be sold in regular stores due to packaging issues or nearing expiry dates. This initiative aims to reduce food waste while offering affordable options to staff.

The scheme, which began as a pilot at the Darlington Regional Distribution Centre, has now expanded to all 11 regional distribution centres nationwide. Aldi estimates that the colleague shops will help prevent approximately 240 tonnes of food waste each year.

Expired food items

This initiative is part of Aldi’s broader strategy to reduce food waste. The company has set a goal to cut food waste by 90% by 2030, compared to 2017 levels. The colleague shops contribute to this target by redirecting products that would otherwise go to waste.

Aldi’s colleague shops not only help reduce food waste but also provide employees with affordable food options. The program has received positive feedback from staff, who appreciate the opportunity to purchase discounted items.
