The government has confirmed letters will be sent to millions of households about the Warm Home Discount — a one-off
£150 credit applied to electricity bills for eligible households. This post explains who is likely to benefit, what changed for
winter 2025–26, and where to look for more information.
What is the Warm Home Discount?
The Warm Home Discount (WHD) provides a £150 one-off reduction on electricity bills — usually added directly as a credit,
or for prepayment meters via voucher/top-up. It is not paid in cash and does not affect entitlement to other winter payments (for example Winter Fuel Payment).
Official guidance is available on GOV.UK. Read GOV.UK — Warm Home Discount.

Key changes for 2025–26
For 2025–26 the scheme was expanded to widen access. The government removed some previous technical barriers so more low-income households (including families with children)
can receive the discount. Eligible households should receive confirmation letters between October and December and the credit applied by 31 March 2026. For announcement details see the government press release.

Who is eligible and what to do
Eligibility depends on where you live (England/Wales/Scotland) and your circumstances. In England and Wales many people on qualifying means-tested benefits or on
Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit) may be automatically eligible based on the qualifying date (check GOV.UK for the precise qualifying date). In Scotland the route to receive the credit can differ — some groups must apply via their supplier. See Ofgem and Age UK guides for nation-specific details.

Practical tips
- Watch for your letter from the DWP or your energy supplier between October and December.
- Make sure your name (or your partner’s) is on the electricity bill on the qualifying date — this often matters for automatic eligibility.
- If you use a prepayment meter, you can still qualify — you may receive a voucher or have your smart meter topped up.
- If you believe you’re eligible but haven’t had a letter by mid-January, contact the WHD helpline or your supplier (check GOV.UK and Age UK pages above for contact details).
